Thanks guys for the replies – gave me a lot of think about.

Still, I’m leaning towards getting an entry-level DSLR considering all the cons attached to it.
- Me & kumander aren’t that fond of videos – so that’s just ok.
- The added weight & bulk isn’t a turn-off really for me.
- Security hassle shouldn’t be problem – I have my “press id” with me always.
- Upgradeable and a long-term “investment”.

Anyway, after some reading up – I’m thinking either D40 or K100D right now. K100D for its in-body shake reduction and 0% installment offering (plus its made in the Philippines).

Hooray

i dont believe in built-in shake reduction. I have a VR lens, pag pasmado ka pasmado ka. blurred pa din yan. lalo na kung ala flash or low light or night conditions

plus i dont trust Pentax enough to part my money with such an unpopular brand on dslrs

You are so naive and brand conscious when it comes to equipment, geez... May VR na blurry padin? Go take some classes or something hehe.

subukan mo david. the 18-200VR is not really a stable lens ambigat kaya. lalo na pag naka 150mm up

Uh oh

Don't trust Pentax?

I'd rather not trust you on your so-called advices here in the net.

veed,

Thanks for the heads up... also read your warning in DPP today. Will text bluebimmer (since he already bought one) to check his. Will be buying one by next week.

trust me you're making the wrong choice. mahirap mag-invest ngaun ng 20-30k+ sa mga dslr na hindi gano kilala paktay ka pa sa mga acessories pihado mas mahal pa ni hindi ka magka-option ng slightly used na good deal kasi wala naman gano meron nyan

by the time you realize, you'll remember me Blush

Talking Pentax K20D and K200D on the way ...
Good news for you guys, and guaranteed aren't rumors

Heard from some insider (not Shriro ) that Pentax will be announcing two new cameras early next year, most likely in mid to end of Jan 2008. Actually Pentax planned to announce these new cameras in Oct, but they decided to have more time finalize the products, they decided to delay the announcement till Jan 2008.

Here are some leaked specs about these two new cameras:

Camera 1 -- K20D (upgrade version from K10D):
- Still and APS-C cropped sensor, but will be a CMOS sensor which has 14mp or more pixels. The sensor was developed by Pentax themselves, not by Sony . Most likely it'll be manufactured by Cypress or Samsung
- New digital imaging processor w/ 14bit RAW output. Don't know for sure if it'd have 22bit ADC as the K10D
- 3" back LCD with Live View feature
- Improved SR
- Similar built as K10D (weather sealed, stainless steel body...)
- Improved menu system, including AF adjustment for different lenses
- Some other minor improvement.

Camera 2 -- K200D (upgrade version from K100D Super):
- Same sensor as the one used in K10D (10mp by Sony)
- 12bit RAW output with NO 22bit ADC support
- Bigger buffer, can take 10 RAW continuously, JPG shots number only limited by the card. But still the same 2.9 fps
- Similar built as K100D Super with Pentamirror focusing screen, still use 4 AA batteries
- Some other minor improvement

These are more or less confirmed changes/upgrades from previous models, but might subject to change.

Some other news about the new lenses:
DA*60-250 will most likely be announced next month (Dec 2007)
DA*200, DA*300 and some other new lenses will be announced along with the new cameras.

That's all for now. I'll keep you guys updated.

Cheers and happy shooting.

If you're saying that it's the photographer and not the camera... then why are you still bugging me into getting a D40?

Trust me John, with these babies, you'll never need any other lenses, It's an investment that will last a long time, noting that these two are pro grade lenses, they will outlast your body before you do.

BTW it's called GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

I think I need a replacement for my 17-85 EF-S f/4-5.6...

it's a very useful range, it's lightweight, it's reasonably compact, it's a very useful and versatile lens, it's what I would carry on a long vacation abroad...

but for the kind of photos we take here at bigbigcar, I find that I need something with more reach at the long end.

What do you think of the 24-105 f/4 L? Or would you recommend that I just go for a 70-200 f/4 L?

Definitely the 70-200 F/4 IS if you already have the EF-S... the 24-105 is nice, but a 20mm increase in reach won't be much compared to your 18-85.

is the IS on the 70-200 f4 L worth the price difference from the non-IS version? Will be using a long lens mainly for outdoor events like karting, autocross, etc. In low light, I think I can get by with a tripod for static tele shots in case I find the need for these.

ang panget ng build quality ng 17-85 EF-S. the zoom barrel is very loose now, and the focus ring jammed yesterday (had to forcibly snap it back)

Unless you wanna tote a tripod around all the time and shoot in broad daylight, IS is a must in my book at FL over 100mm...

BTW, Canon's EF-S 55-250 IS came out already, I think it retails around $370-S$450 here so that'll equate to about <14K only for a perfect complement to any 18-55/85 user that doesn't want to go L yet.

Hmm... okay lang naman, we bring a tripod during shoots. Mahal na nung f4 L IS hehe... about the same price as a 70-200 f2.8 L? Between f4 IS and f2.8 non-IS, which is more useful in general?

Malayo padin yung price ng 2.8 sa 4 hehe.... You're talking about 1600 vs 1100 USD respectively, while the non-IS versions are 1K and 550, respectively... I'm a firm believer that if you're getting a zoom that reaches beyond 200mm, IS is a must, but that's just me...

Sigma 50-150 is a really good lens as well...
